  • 第一道 鍋燒烏龍麵
    • 流為窪山準備的『京都風味家常菜』
        「這是用滷的海帶和油豆腐豆腐渣可樂餅白芝麻味噌醬拌茼蒿鞍馬煮沙丁魚魚豆腐用京番茶燉的五花肉梅肉拌生腐皮,再加上小石醃漬的醬菜,全都是些家常小菜。硬要說的話,只有刻意把米芯煮的比較硬的江州米海老芋味噌湯算是這裡頭最高級的食物了。請慢用。可以多撒一點山椒粉到味噌湯裡喝,暖暖身子。」

        「先把昆布切成粗段的九條蔥鋪在陶鍋裡,倒入高湯,等秀哥做到矮腳飯桌前的時候再點火⋯⋯我想八成是這樣的步驟。把湯煮滾,放入雞肉,等到把雞肉煮熟以後,再把烏龍麵撥散放進去。最後再放上魚板麥麩香菇炸蝦,把打進去。」

  • 第二道 紅酒燉牛肉
    • 流為妙和信子準備的松花堂便當
        「請容我說明一下松花堂便當的菜色,隔成十字形的右上角是前菜,類似所謂的小碟菜,裡頭有各式各樣的小東西。右下角是燒烤類,今天是照燒青甘魚。左上角是生魚片和用醋醃漬的東西,有明石的鯛魚和紀州的鮪魚,唐津的鮑魚則是先用火稍微烤過。還有炙燒的宮島星鰻,再加上小黃瓜和茗荷,是用醋醃漬而成的小菜。左下角是松茸飯,雖是信州產的松茸,但香氣十分迷人。等一下還有湯品,請慢慢享用。」
        流向兩人行個禮,轉身離開。
        「我開動了。」妙雙手合十,拿起筷子。
        「好好吃。」已經迫不及待先開動的信子正咀嚼著鯛魚。
        「生魚片也不錯。但這個小碟菜做得真好吃。這是金梭魚的長條壽司吧!這是高湯蛋捲,然後這應該是鵪鶉肉做的丸子。這道櫻花煮章魚還是什麼,一放到舌尖上就化開了。」

        「這是馬頭魚和蟹肉的湯。在寒天地凍時,以太白粉勾芡作成羹湯。請趁熱品嚐。」
        流將托盤放夾在腋下回答。
        「柚子的香味聞起來真舒服。」信子將臉湊到碗邊。
    • 小石為信子重現遺忘的紅酒燉牛肉
        「以美食家聞名的文豪對『Grill Furuta』寫下了『宛如牛肉蔬菜鍋的味道』的評語,但我認為略有不同。他的意思或許是想說,不同於顏色較深的牛肉醬汁,而是淡淡的番茄醬之味道,風味也比較清爽。先用波爾多紅酒稍微加熱一下事先以基底醬汁煮熟的肉,在跟蔬菜丟進同一個鍋子裡,加滿牛肉醬汁,細火慢燉,就會變成這種味道。如果一開始就把蔬菜跟肉一起熬煮,形狀就會散掉,味道也會亂七八糟。若以這種『Grill Furuta』的做法來製作,肉的口感就會裏滿牛肉醬汁。當肉的美味和醬汁的風味充滿口腔,這才第一次有巧妙融合的感覺。」

  • 第三道 青花魚壽司
    • 比平常還辣的咖哩

        「不過流先生,茶碗蒸裡的松茸是多餘的。那松茸肯定是丹波產的吧?香味太過強烈,都破壞了茶碗蒸的風味。俗話不是說,過猶不及嗎?用香氣淡雅的高湯所做的茶碗蒸,只要有百合根和魚板、香菇就夠了。
    • 流為岩倉準備的料理
        燙水菜油豆腐燉鯡魚茄子鹽漬大頭菜雞蛋封小魚乾青花魚芝麻拌芋頭莖,還有應該是鯧魚的西京燒吧!還冒著熱氣,看樣子才剛煎好。味噌湯的餡料裡有洋蔥和馬鈴薯。岩倉雙手合十祝禱之後,左手捧著清水燒的碗,伸出筷子。
    • 流為岩倉重現青花魚壽司
        「土佐有種叫做田舍壽司的東西,是將特產的柚子運用在壽司飯裡醋和柚子汁加再一起,所以壽司飯才會變成黃色。具有獨特的香味,非常美味迷人。但香味和檸檬略有不同就是了。」
        坐在一旁的小石皺著鼻子猛聞。
        「這個呢?看起來像是切成薄片的茄子?」
        岩倉留意到夾在青花魚的生魚片和壽司飯之間的蔬菜。
        「我也是一直到最後才搞清楚這是什麼玩意兒。這就是山田先生記憶中的沖繩,正確來說應該是琉球。據說土佐人將大野芋稱為琉球,會把它切成薄片和青花魚疊在一起,做成青花魚壽司。若提到京都風味的青花魚壽司,好像是夾昆布吧!我想是琉球這個別名留在山田先生的記憶裡,不知不覺之間就成了沖繩。你還記得這種口感吧?」

  • 第四道 炸豬排
    • 流為須也子準備的料理
        「左上方依序是鞍馬煮宮島牡蠣粟麩的款冬花莖味噌田樂蕨類和竹筍的山菜蒸飯炭烤柳葉魚芥末拌京都土雞的雞胸肉,至於若狹的醃漬青花魚則是用千枚漬包起來。右下方那一碗則是用太白粉勾芡的蛤蜊丸子湯。因為客人的要求是希望我能營造出期待春天來臨,卻又不捨得冬天離去的風情,我就做成了這樣的料理。今天的飯是用丹波產的越光米煮的,請慢用。」
    • 流為須也子重現炸豬排(沾醬)
        「是的。據說他使用的是山口產的苦橙。甜甜的沾醬是用苦橙熬煮的果醬辣味的沾醬使用了苦橙胡椒柚子醋沾醬裡頭則有苦橙的果汁。」
        「難道是他忘不了故鄉的味道嗎?」
        站在一旁的小石插嘴問道。
        「我想這款柚子醋沾醬跟河豚生魚片附上的醬汁是一樣的,沒想到跟炸豬排還挺對味的呢!」須也子用小指沾取柚子醋,舔了一下。
        「雖然只有一點點,但裡頭還加了大蒜。就像做成河豚生魚片的時候會把蔥卷在裡面,跟那是同樣的意思。」
    • 流為須也子重現炸豬排(麵衣)
        「摸起來濕潤扎實,但紋理又很細緻,的確很像新鮮的麵包粉,但是又感覺乾乾的。」
        麵包粉如戲雪般從須也子的指間紛紛滑落。
        「通常麵包粉的厚度都是五毫米,但岡江先生認為三毫米才是最理想的厚度。夫人稱讚好吃的炸豬排就是三毫米的麵衣,細緻的口感也比較好。但對於真正愛吃豬排的人來說,這樣的厚度似乎有點不過癮——聽說他經常和麵包店的老闆討論這件事。」
        流將麵包粉放在掌心裡。
        須也子目露哀傷的神情,用指尖把玩著麵包粉。
        「我會就我所知道的範圍抄寫給您食譜,而且把三毫米跟五毫米的麵包粉做法統統寫上去。根據我的記憶,豬肉應該是岐阜縣的『養老豬』,炸油則是太白的麻油和荷蘭的沙拉油各半混合。」
  • 第五道 拿坡里義大利麵
    • 流為明日香準備的料理
        「從左上方依序是切成細絲的鯛魚生魚片拌山椒葉,請沾柚子醋來吃。接著,是一口大小的賀茂茄子田樂燒茗荷夾舞鶴的鳥尾蛤、用甜醋醃漬的斑鱭魚所捏成小一號的條狀壽司油炸六月初的松茸海鰻源平燒、萬願寺辣椒天婦羅鮑魚則是先用西京味噌醃漬過再下去烤魚麵線土雞鞍馬煮。夾有松子的煙燻青花魚柴漬拌生腐皮。全都做成一口的份量,我想應該很合女性的胃口。等星鰻飯蒸好後,我在送上來,請慢慢享用。」流結束餐點的介紹,將托盤夾在腋下。
    • 流為明日香重現義式義大利麵
        「聽說有很多人會特地預留在名古屋換車的時間,前往這家店。但是這道菜的名稱是義式義大利麵,而非拿坡里義大利麵。這道菜在名古屋一般都稱為義式義大利麵,是先把蛋打散,鋪在鐵板上,再放上義大利麵。妳之所以會有黃色的印象,應該是因為蛋汁的緣故吧!至於你爺爺照片裡拍到的紅色瓶子則是這個,巨大的辣椒醬瓶子。我也忍不住用數位相機拍了下來。」
  • 第六道 馬鈴薯燉肉

        「因為剛好是這個時期,我準備了類似賞花的便當。放在懷紙上的是山菜天婦羅,有莢果蕨的嫩芽紅葉笠艾草、遼東楤木漉油牛尾菜。也準備了抹茶鹽,不過天婦羅醬汁也很好吃喔!生魚片櫻雕針魚,請沾柚子醋食用。還有味噌醃漬櫻鱒的烤魚滷春筍醋味噌涼拌螢烏賊海帶芽燉了一整個晚上的近江牛炸雞翅、湯是蛤蜊和竹筍的丸子湯。有竹筍飯,也提供白飯。不夠的話請盡管說。可以續飯。那麼請慢用。」

        「有話等吃完再說,醬菜是長時間醃漬的廣島菜味噌湯則是用剩的碎鯛魚熬湯,料只打了蛋花。這些全部都是你愛吃的東西吧!請慢用。」
    • 流為久彥重現馬鈴薯燉肉(馬鈴薯和牛肉部分)
        「據說,位於豐島的吳是馬鈴薯燉肉的發祥地。為了不把馬鈴薯煮得七零八落的,吳的做法是採用五月皇后的馬鈴薯品種,但令堂君枝女士使用的,卻是豐島附近的特產,也就是赤崎的馬鈴薯。那是稱為『出島』的品種,如今也已是大受歡迎的馬鈴薯。洋蔥產自淡路島,醬油則是小豆島的產品。早在近三十年前就能堅持選用這樣的食材,也算是很了不起了,可見你的母親真的很愛你。」
        「這上頭寫的大和煮莫非是⋯⋯」
        久彥依舊目不轉睛低盯著食譜,喃喃自語似地說道;
        「沒錯,就是那個罐頭。這上頭也有寫,當時在豐島上還沒有哪家能供給品質穩定的牛肉。而且你好像也不敢吃太肥的肉,所以才會改用能始終保持相同品質的牛肉罐頭。再加上府上經營的是食品倉儲公司,能夠順利取得這種罐頭也是理由之一吧!」

        「你記憶中的馬鈴薯燉肉之所以會紅通通的,是因為令堂將你小時候不敢吃的紅蘿蔔磨碎,加入馬鈴薯燉肉裡所製。不過,當幸子女士繼承這道食譜的時候,是就算直接保留紅蘿蔔的形狀,你也敢吃了,所以顏色才會不一樣。還有一點,就是為什麼會有兩鍋的問題。之所以只有一個鍋子裡有肉,就是因為大和煮的關係。罐頭本身就是熟的,味道也都調好了,所以只要在吃以前在放進去就好了。幸子女士可能是想說,大和煮幾乎沒有油脂,煮過頭的話可能會太老吧!」

        稍過中午時,海岬咖啡屋裡看得到窗的桌上擺了許多料理。浩司把新鮮的黑鯛切片,作成生魚片。小綠則做了泰式風味的咖哩沙拉。然後,悅子女士泡了冰咖啡。飯後甜點則是正式升格為新產品的香蕉冰淇淋。

        悅子在蘇打餅乾上擺上奶油乳酪、生火腿片、鮭魚卵等,做成配酒小菜。還端出帶著柚香的醃菜,以及白天煮好,已經充分入味的黑輪
        今晚的酒,是我這一陣子很喜歡的甲州葡萄酒。這種山梨縣產,名叫「甲州」的葡萄品種念造出來的白酒,很奇妙地跟和食非常搭,而且很順口。悅子的酒量普普通通,但這款酒一定可以博得她的歡心。

      便當裡頭只有羊栖菜馬鈴薯燉肉什錦豆,加上隨便塞進去的白飯,便當的整體色調非常黯淡,宛如三智子現在的心情。
    • 三智子給敦子的便當(星期一)
        炸蝦炸肉餅迷你鮭魚干貝焗烤馬鈴薯沙拉炒蓮藕絲,還有野菇拌飯。連幫洋太郎都沒做過這麼豐富豪華的便當。
    • 三智子替敦子吃的午餐(星期一) 咖哩專賣店 俾斯麥
        老闆打開大尺寸電子鍋,盛了還冒著蒸氣的白飯到盤子裡,然後淋上大量的咖哩,搭配由七種蔬菜醃漬的醬菜「福神漬」以及蕗蕎,跟水杯還有湯匙一起放在吧台上。
    • 三智子給敦子的便當(星期二)
        「呃,昨天謝謝您。咖哩飯好好吃。我從昨天的口味獲得靈感,今天的便當做了乾炒咖哩醃黃瓜優格沙拉,還有蜂蜜薄荷口味的涼拌鳳梨。」
    • 三智子替敦子吃的午餐(星期二) 果昔攤 「水母」
        妮可在四台果汁機中的其中一台裡放進草莓、柳橙、芒果切片,還有碎冰,按下開關。在一陣宛如道路施工的強大噪音下,出現了一杯色澤像太陽的果汁,連同一份用蠟紙包起來的三明治捲一起放在餐盤裡。
        「好啦,吃吧。」
        三智子遞出千圓紙鈔,收回三百圓零錢。她端著餐盤在廂型車前方的桌子坐下來。先前全身的痛楚煙消雲散,現在全身伸展開來,還能深呼吸。她喝了一口果汁,灼熱的喉嚨瞬間清涼,舒服極了。酸酸甜甜,整個人都活過來。三明治捲是用薄薄的吐司麵包夾著鮮蝦、番茄跟酪梨捲起來,清爽的酸味真棒。她瞄了一眼手機,十二點四十分。

        「今天我做了日式便當。用的是冰箱裡的剩菜,不過有滷油豆腐跟四季豆煎蛋捲,還有照燒青魽。」

        天婦羅蓋飯份量十足,淋在白飯上的醬汁好夠味
        那天下午嘴唇始終保持油油亮亮,根本不需要另外塗護唇膏。

        「今天帶的是海苔便當。配菜有檸檬口味的地瓜燒煎蛋捲薑燒肉片跟柴漬。」
    • 三智子替敦子吃的午餐(星期四) 松壽司
        各式魚料理在陽光下如同珠寶閃閃發光。油花均勻分布的鮪魚中腹肉宛如紅寶石閃爍的鮭魚卵軍艦捲晶瑩剔透到看得見下方醋飯的白肉魚結實飽滿的雪白花枝⋯⋯
        好久沒吃壽司了,最近一次大概是爸爸告別式上叫的外送吧,那時候難過到食不知味。三智子偷偷瞄了社長一眼,他正瞇著眼睛把白肉魚握壽司送到嘴邊。她下定決心,拆開衛生筷,夾起鮪魚中腹肉握壽司沾點醬油,小碟子的醬油表面立刻泛起一圈圈油花。三智子閉起雙眼,品嚐著脂肪溶解後滲入醋飯的瞬間。
    • 雲與木社長的回憶
        「我是在大阪念大學,那個地方有很多便宜又好吃的餐廳。我常去南區一家叫『自由軒』的西餐廳,這家店很有名,還曾出現在織田作之助的小說裡。我常吃一道咖哩醬拌飯,上面還會放一顆生雞蛋,用湯匙拌著吃。東京很少看到這種上不了檯面的食物吧?真無趣。」
    • 三智子給敦子的便當(星期五)
        「梅子小魚拌飯,配豆腐堡炒蘿蔔絲青花菜拌柴魚片,還有甜煮紅蘿蔔!」
    • 三智子替敦子代班(星期五) 咖哩專賣店 俾斯麥
        白飯應該還有很多。打開冰箱看到有蛋,立刻鬆了一口氣。接著她迅速拿出洋蔥、紅蘿蔔、培根、奶油、辣醬油等材料。然後拿出砧板,把蔬菜跟培根切碎。把鍋底剩下一點點咖哩醬的鍋子加熱,加入奶油融化,用長筷子在鍋底攪拌,依序加入洋蔥、紅蘿蔔、培根跟白飯炒拌。只見白飯逐漸染成咖哩色,散發出令人食指大動的香味,最後用辣醬油調味後,自己試吃了一小口。
        三智子把乾炒咖哩飯分裝在兩個盤子裡,中間挖個洞,各打一顆生雞蛋。再附上醃菜。
  • 第二話 敦子小姐的宵夜
    • 蘿蔔燒肋排
    • 「東京洋蔥湯」
        打開容器的蓋子,一陣蒸氣刺激著喉頭。清湯裡有大塊紅蘿蔔馬鈴薯插著丁香的洋蔥、大頭菜、芹菜,以及豬肉塊。喝了一口,眼睛都亮起來。光是用蔬菜跟肉一起燉的簡單料理,老實說,一開始看到「法式湯」還覺得有點掃興,但這道法式湯的口味卻有著前所未見的成熟風味。入喉的熱湯比外表看來濃郁,但進入胃後香草的清新氣息立刻擴散,洗去油脂。湯匙的前端設計成類似叉子的鋸齒,很方便切碎湯料。蔬菜鬆軟香甜,肉塊嫩到快劃開,每一樣材料都有清楚的特質,卻又搭配得恰到好處行豐富的滋味。這等美味當然會有生意上門——

      「嗯——」幸江沒有立刻同意。
      「日本的年輕小孩,對柴魚、昆布和醃梅子根本沒興趣。外國人就更不用說了。上次,我去市場時,忽然有點靈感,就把它寫下來了。」
      綠把筆記本給幸江看。上面畫了各種飯團的插圖。幸江不由得把臉湊近。
      「我認為還是該採用本地人喜歡的食材比較好。鮭魚大家本就熟悉所以可以保留。妳看,這樣的如何?」
      也許是從炸蝦飯團得到的靈感,放上了油炸小龍蝦的小龍蝦飯團;用麋鹿做的鹿肉飯團;以本地人愛吃的鯡魚做的鯡魚飯團。插圖旁邊分別以芬蘭語寫著「rapu」、「hirvenliha」、「silakka」。

      Piled on the table were the remains of Sarah’s famous sausage and bean hot pot supper, and now everyone had gathered around the blazing fire, drinking herb tea.

      "Fancy a FizzFroot?"

      Jenna smiled. "You got one in chocolate?" Beetle looked crestfallen. "Sorry, no. They only come in fruit flavors."
    • "Edifice" sandwich
      Jenna picked a tall, triangular stack of small sandwiches called "Edifice."
    • "Chemistry" sandwich
      Beetle chose a large cube-shaped sandwich called "Chemistry."
    • WizzFizz specials
      Beetle returned carrying two WizzFizz specials, which were as near to a FizzFroot as it was possible to get. He set a pink and green drink in front of Jenna with a flourish.

      Minty strawberry,” he said. “It’s new.”

      He returned with a teetering stack of triangles and a huge cube.

      "Wow," said Jenna. "Thank you." She tentatively took the top triangle off the pile and bit into it. It was a delicious mixture of chopped smoked fish and cucumber with Wizard Sandwiches' famous sandwich sauce.

      Beetle regarded his large cube with dismay. It was one solid lump of bread made from half a loaf. In it were drilled nine holes filled with different colored jams and sauces, and from the center hole a wisp of smoke was rising. Beetle knew at once he had made a mistake; he just knew that when he tried to eat it, the colored gloop would run down his face and drip on the table and he would look like a kid. Why hadn’t he chosen something simple?

      Beetle began sawing at his cube. The multicolored gloop ran across his plate and swirled into a thick rainbow puddle. Beetle began to turn pink. His sandwich was an utter disaster. Jenna regarded the gooey mess on Beetle’s plate, which was beginning to fizz alarmingly.

    • At the Traders’ Market
      Every year the Castle inhabitants flocked to the Traders’ Market to stock up on winter provisions of woolen cloth, candles, lanterns, salted fish, dried meats and fruits, fur and sheepskins before the Big Freeze blew in and cut off the Castle for six weeks or so. People also ate the hot pies, roasted nuts, and crumbly cakes and drank gallons of the huge varieties of spiced mulled drinks for sale.

      At least Aunt Zelda made an effort to cook whatever weird ingredients she used until they were reasonably unrecognizable, but the bowls of squirming salted earwigs and a large dish of skinned mice covered with a lumpy, pale sauce made no effort at disguise.

      Mouse and maggot casserole followed by a slug of Witches’ Brew always improved her temper—the coven’s new acquisition wasn’t so bad, all things considered.

      Silently she thanked Silas for all the stores he had laid in: logs neatly stacked under Jenna’s bed, blankets, rugs and cushions, two cupboards full of jars of preserved fruit and vegetables, a whole box of dried WizStix, which would become strips of tasty dried fish or meat when reconstituted with the correct Spell (the tiny, sticklike Charm for which Silas had thoughtfully left tucked beside them).

      They are looking at scrawls on a chalkboard offering three varieties of fish, something called Pot Luck Stew and a steak from an animal that no one has ever heard of.

      They watch Nicko demolish numerous plates of odd-shaped fish garnished with a variety of seaweed and a thick red steak with white bristles on its rind, which he feeds to Ullr after one mouthful. Nicko is at last eating his final dish—a long white fish with a lot of tiny bones and a reproachful stare. Jenna, Beetle and Snorri have just finished a communal bowl of harbor dessert—baked apples sprinkled with sweet crumble and covered with chocolate sauce.

      Aunt Zelda retrieved the silver tube, then sat down at her desk and revived herself with a cup of hot cabbage water into which she stirred a large spoon of Marshberry jam.

      Septimus heaved off Marcia's saddlebags, extracted four roast chickens and a bag of apples and placed them beside the dragon's nose in case he woke for a midnight snack.

It was an exceptionally odd creation—a large plate of something black and wobbly, possibly a jellyfish, but equally possibly a fungus plucked from the depths of the hold. Reverentially the deckhand placed the dish in the center of the table. Everyone stared in astonishment. With a shock they all realized that it looked like—maybe even was—a giant beetle boiled, peeled and laid on a bed of seaweed.

      To Septimus’s amazement, Marcia had put together the perfect Young Army Officer Cadet Hostile Territory Survival Pack, with some rather nice added extras in the form of a self-renewing FizzBom special, a Ma Custard bumper variety pack of sweets and a fancy WaterGnome.
    • What the gang ate
      Using an assortment of packets labeled WizDri, Septimus put together what he called a "Young Army stew, only much better." They sat and watched the stew bubble in the pot on the stove until the aroma made it impossible to just watch it anymore. They ate it with Marcia's StayFresh bread and washed it down with hot chocolate—made by Jenna with the help of her ChocolateCharm, which she had used on some seashells. As they sat around the flickering FlickFyre stove, silently drinking the hot chocolate, each one of them felt surprisingly content.

      They cooked the fish in the approved Sam Heap style, by threading them onto wet sticks and holding them over the glowing embers. Marcia’s StayFresh bread and dried fruit provided the rest of supper, and the WaterGnome fueled so many FizzFroots that they lost count.

    • Syrah's first day on the island
      I have made a camp in a sheltered hollow overlooking the lighthouse. I like to see the light at night. Today I found all that I need: sweet water from a spring, a prickly yet delicious fruit that I picked from a grove of trees and two fish that I caught with my bare hands (you see, my time spent fishing in the Moat was not wasted!)

[Food in Books] Physik (Septimus Heap #3) - Angie Sage

    • Mint chocolates
      It was full of what looked like thick gold coins, but they smelled like mint chocolates. Jenna picked one up, scraped away some of the thin gold leaf and tentatively licked the dark, bitter chocolate. Unable to resist, she popped the rest of the mint into her mouth. It melted in the most wonderful mix of mint and chocolate that she had ever tasted.
    • Hot drink and squashy sweets
      Broda had returned carrying a tray of tall glasses filled with a hot misty-looking drink and a gold plate of delicate pink and green squashy sweets covered in a dusting of soft sugar. She offered them to Jenna, who took a pink one. It was like nothing Jenna had eaten before – smooth and chewy at the same time, and it tasted of a wonderful aromatic mixture of rose petals, honey and lemon. The misty drink was less wonderful. It tasted bitter, but it was hot, and Jenna was enjoying sitting beside Broda's fire.

    • Hot mulled wine and savory biscuits
      Inside the cabin, a table was set with a jug of hot mulled wine and a plate of savory biscuits; around the table were comfortable seats covered in Royal Red rugs and cushions. In the middle of the cabin, a small stove was glowing with a blaze of seasoned apple logs and aromatic herbs, which filled the cabin with a warming and welcoming fragrance.

      FizzFroot was a favorite drink of both himself and Septimus; it was made from an everlasting FizzBom spell that the Manuscriptorium had refurbished for someone who had never collected it. The drink was actually ice-cold but needed boiling water to activate it.

    • Self-renewing banana chew
      Nicko knew all about Septimus's weird taste in sweets and had never quite gotten over eating a self-renewing banana chew that had kept Reappearing in his mouth no matter how many times he had spat it out.
    • Mint Blasts
      Septimus put a few tiny green balls into Nicko's hand. Nicko tipped his head back and shoved the Mint Blasts into his mouth as if he were taking a gulp of medicine.
  • Ch. 21
    • Nekawa
      Simon padded across the cold and clammy slate in his bare feet to fix a glass of Nekawa to settle his nerves. Carefully, he poured a muddy brown liquid with tendrils of floating mold into a tall glass, cracked a raw egg into it and gulped it down. It tasted foul.

Manga Reading List

Hi. You may find the permalink for this post slightly puzzling (originally titled "Lmao K I have no idea how to use this =P"). As noted above, I've repurposed this post. I used to use it as a documentation of Blogger links of blogs I sort of liked and followed, for at the time, I don't believe Blogger had the function of "following". After rejoining Blogger, I now see that what I had been looking for but could not find back then, is now provided, so the post became rather redundant.

I briefly considered using this post to ask for help on Blogger layouts and templates, a problem of mine a small amount of people (possibly only one person lol) might be aware of, as I've previously voiced it on Goodreads (www.goodreads.com/user_status/show/115366320)
[...] idk what's up, but neither my Firefox nor Safari allows me to update my "template"... I'm not a complete moron when it comes to html, but I admit I'm a bit rusty. My layout is stuck at a classic narrow and centered 2-column format. After evaluation, I wish to use the space more efficiently and make it a 3-column layout, as in having the main body in the middle and being the widest, and having 2 sidebars on each side to put stuff like widgets. I can "customize", like how big, how wide, what font, what color; that's the afterwards... I'm missing the crucial step to properly separate columns... I tried to tweak around, but the extra panel I created isn't appearing in an ideal position, and I'm at a loss. If anyone knows how to work this seemingly simple situation, tips and advise would be greatly appreciated.
It would certainly fit my original title of the post (Lmao K I have no idea how to use this =P), but that being said, on the long run, I believe it would still be more of a temporary issue, which means the post would again one day be somewhat inefficient. Nonetheless, I figured it wouldn't hurt for me to use some portion of the post to describe my current predicament (if I actually got help cuz of it, then that's a bonus for me!), and use the rest for something I can keep for long term.

As stated in About moi, on my blog, I plan to review manga (and comicbooks) if I ever have time to do so. I, however, do not add books of those two media onto my GR account, for I find GR's recommendation system needing improvement. Adding manga or comicbooks may royally effed up the already not-exactly-accurate recommendation I'm receiving, so I'd rather avoid the potential for it to go worse.

The following would be the 3rd time I'm posting the documentation of manga I'm currently reading. It was first relocated from one Chinese forum to another (and thank Gawd I did so, for the blog function where I first post it has been down since late 2014). The list was last updated on December 2015 on the 2nd location, as 2016 I've been focusing on reading books with words rather than with sequential arts. I'll try to update it when I do go back to my manga phase, and I'll gradually modify the format. Right now, you are seeing exactly what I had when I last updated it somewhere else. (Removed two completed titles, fixed typos.)

About moi

I don't think I've actually gone back and edited a blogpost on blogger before; and if I had, that would literally be a decade ago! The original blogpost published on 11/28/06, 8:23 AM, only consists 11 words. It was truly a testing post lol. I guess I'll be taking my time to update this post. For the time being, I suppose you only need to know that I'm bilingual.

I'm not sure if it's because I've been living in the States for sometimes now; perhaps it's cuz nothing is exactly fresh and new anymore, I do not feel that books written in certain languages are more superior than the rest. To be clear, I'm also NOT suggesting people who only read in one language have a complex or anything; I guess I had to accidentally come across some hidden gems to realize that, seriously, just because some books aren't written in English, doesn't make them any lesser! They just unfortunately have fewer opportunities to be internationally recognized.

The following may seem a bit off topic, but I feel I need to elaborate, for it really affected me on a psych level. I'm a firm "Taiwan-IS-Taiwan" believer; I'm Taiwanese, period. I'm NOT gonna deny I have Chinese roots; that's a FACT, and I'm thankful to be born into a COUNTRY that originated from another that has SUCH a rich history. When I was young, I suppose I wasn't matured enough to appreciate it, or that my taste had changed as I grew; either way, once I stopped limiting myself, I honestly felt honored xP. THAT being said, the past IS the PAST. I cannot fathom deluding myself into thinking I were from PRC. And before anyone gets all offended, let me explain what I mean. I would feel equally incredulous were I to be forced to say I'm Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, or Japanese etc. I have nothing against those countries, I don't exactly have anything against PRC, even; just that regardless of whether or not they are "good" countries, they ARE NOT MY COUNTRY. That's not where I was born and raised from.

My point? So yeah, because of the political situation, I admit I'm extra self-conscious (self not even as in "myself," but on behalf of the country lmao), lacking confidence, and could be a little bitter when some works, that, imo, truly OWNED IT, aren't widely celebrated. Understand this, I DO know different taste can't and shouldn't be forced upon others; that's not the issue. It however saddens me that, a lot of the times, through body language and tone, I'm often under the impression that a lot of people aren't even considering giving the works a chance, just because they were created by people from our own country. This is not just occurring to literature; in fact, I first noticed this when it comes to manga.

Before embracing my love for reading "books with more words," I've always been a very visual person, still am. Manga is a big part of my life and would continue to be. To cut the story short, I think it's safe to say that the majority of fellow manga readers in Taiwan, looks down on manga produced by Taiwanese artists, thinking that those works or somehow less, or a form of copycat. It is no wonder there's no tens of thousands Taiwanese mangakas in this kind of environment. Heck, perhaps I'm a coward, but my mangaka dream died when I sobered up evaluating my surroundings; passionate or not, I didn't think the extra pressure of "proving I'm not a copycat/I'm equally as good as the Japanese mangaka I admire" to my audience was worth going through.

The lack of self-respect is pretty ingrained in our culture. Before becoming the next newbie to attempt fighting against generations of "selling ourselves short," what I can do is, however, proudly introduce and recommend the Taiwanese works I am so enamored with and think highly of, the ones I feel are just as good as, if not better than, the works from other countries.

Last thing to note before tying back to what can be expected on this blog: Putting aside the whole thing about endorsing Taiwanese-Pride, there's also the factor regarding to the stereotypical image people often associate when it comes to comicbook/manga readers. For crying out loud, I simply don't understand why these kind of fanatics are receiving way more negative judgments than other fanatics do; you don't see people looking down on hardcore movie fads or music enthusiasts, man, even gamers hold some sort of respect were they to be super active in the field they love. But no, when it comes to serious comicbook or manga readers, passionately talking about what they love would only mostly get them a "nerd/geek/otaku" label.

Do you not see the injustice and unfairness of it all? For the longest time, it almost seemed like only comicbook/manga readers would have common interests with one another, that they could only find people they can relate to within their community. Come off it; fact is, they are human, too, and some, if not most, of them have other interests as well. There shouldn't be an isolation or separation for this particular group. Some (I emphasize NOT ALL) comicbook/manga truly have great substance, and I urge people to try learning to take them seriously, instead of dismissing them due to the format those epic stories were presented in.

You might think I'm a bit hypocritical considering I myself do not add comicbook/manga to my Goodreads account. I've explained why on my profile but all the same: Not only would it be extra amount of work to add all I've read and wanted to read, which actually is the least of all the problem, but because Goodreads (more because of its users) isn't sentient enough to understand comicbook/manga has GENRES as well. Just because I like a certain manga series, doesn't automatically guarantee I would like another that is also in the form of manga. Like they would not recommend me a "horror" novel, just because I like a "sci-fi" novel, both being novels. Until the system improves, I would not be changing how I handle the situation, but to make up for the lack of a great range of readings you wouldn't be able to find on my Goodreads account, you'll see them here on my blog.

To wrap it up, you can expect reviews on novels, companion short stories or novellas, cookbooks, manga, and comicbooks.

Films, TV series, anime, cartoons, and music ARE NOT the focus of this blog; however, were they to be adaptations of materials I am covering, they would make appearances.

You'll also get to see lists I compiled of food featured and mentioned in books I read.
